If the idea of a static filename is promoted, where is it going to be found?
http://somesite.hosted.example.com/users/jwz/weblog/default.xml
http://somesite.hosted.example.com/users/jwz/default.xml
http://somesite.hosted.example.com/users/default.xml
http://somesite.hosted.example.com/default.xml
If the idea of a static fallback file is promoted, in lieu of link tags, we end
up with the very high likelihood of scripts running amok crawling up/down the
URL hierarchy levels. Let's just nip that in the bud by not using a fixed
fallback name at all. Now, will they troll the HTML pages looking for link
tags? Sure, but serving up web pages isn't an issue sites have at this point.
It also offers the chance to use things like referring page URLs or
click-through links to get an idea of how the link was discovered. All of which
have, time and again, been things people ask about.
