I guess this probably falls into the realm of differences between email
readers. In Outlook Express (my personal day-to-day email reader), as soon
as a message arrives from one of these lists, the list's folder name goes
bold, and there's an indication of unread messages. When I do
(occasionally) check the list folders, if there's nothing of interesting,
I'll either mark them all as read, or move them into the trash.

However, that said, if you subscribe to a large amount of low-throughput
mailing lists, I would see that the aggregator-based solution may be more
manageable.

Very true. The important thing is that content providers and application
vendors are beginning to embrace these standards, so we (in the role of end
users) have greater flexibility and power in the way that we manage our
information sources.
