Yes, the could do a better job.  This is a *very* old feature of the 
eGroups software.  It's never been updated (or at least not recently).

Sure, but for groups you don't read often it can be a great way to 
keep tabs on them.  That /without/ cluttering up your inbox with 
digests.  I set most of my groups to "No email" and put them in my 
aggregator.  Once in a great while one of those groups pops up with 
something worthwhile.  So visiting the website isn't all that 
inconvenient.  There are groups that I /don't/ read via the 
aggregator.  Those come, as you mention, directly to my inbox.  It's 
a balancing act.  The nice thing is having the choice to do either.
