An unfortunately choice of words there; sorry. 

The process will get you a representation of your group's work and thoughts,
but what after that? How do you get other people to accept/recognize it? 

Working through a standards body has the advantage that once you get
something through it, you have the implicit weight of all of its
participants with you, even if they have individual problems with what's
published. A one-off group is not only (potentially) lacking context, it
never has a chance to gather that kind of momentum.
