We only need one spec. RSS 1.0 seems to allow for either simplicity or extensibility. It's up to the developer to decide which one. From my understanding, if you don't want to support the namespaces, you don't have to. I'd say that's the really simple approach.
The core is enough to keep things simple. Those of us that choose to make it extensible must do so by creating modules. I think RSS1 is very clean. What do you find so 'dirty' about it?
So if the issue is simple vs. extensible. I'd say we have both.
