Okay, here's the answer.  You need the cryptic "o" parameter.  So, to
search for stuff that involved either "linux" or "greenspan", you'd do
this:

http://search.news.yahoo.com/usns/ynsearch/categories/47/index.html?p=gr
eenspan%20linux&o=o

Brilliant. Thanks very much. It appears that this works with normal url encoding as well eg,
index.html?p=greenspan+linux&o=o
