Julian, there's been a misunderstanding.
No intention of sending around a 300MB file, that was just to give you an
idea of how much content Chris has created.
The enclosures are all under 10MB.
No misunderstanding. BitTorrent would be a good idea for the big zip
file anyway. But even 10Mb for the individual enclosures will take a
little while to download at the typical 512Kb of a cable/adsl link. But
even this is still not the issue. I think the big advantage of a system
like BitTorrent is that the enclosure collection will come from a group
of people who've already downloaded it, not all from the primary site.
So the bandwidth requirement is spread round the clients and doesn't all
hit the main host.
Last year I worked this out with the Morpheus CTO, Daryl Smith. We know how
to do it. But it's premature.
I'm not sure how well Fasttrack/Morpheus/Kazaa/Grokster would work with
this. It feels like BitTorrent is a bit more like a distributed proxy
cache (eg a p2p Akamai) which is what we'd want here.
We have the opposite problem, not enough people using the content we already
have available.
Sure. Understand. Just thinking about architecture. Some of us are
feeling the pain of serving plain old RSS in very large quantities every
hour on the hour. Being hit by similar levels of demand for lots of big
files could be even worse. Especially if 40% of the hits are at 00:00am
EST and another 40% at 00:00am PST
