I would much prefer that it be simply &lt;. This means that HTML is not
allowed, and enables me to write "1<2" and talk about "The &lt;em&gt;
element" without breaking validating pages.

With the apparent backing of namespaces and modules all over, it would
be no problem to include a HTML formated version in an item as well.
