No, that's not going to be workable for the *great* many feeds not using a
filetype that's not likely to change.  To attempt to demand that the /thousands/
of existing *.php, .xml, .rdf and other feeds to change to .rss is extremely
unrealistic.  It would cause a tremendous amount of confusion.

The simple workaround is an .htaccess <file> directive with ForceType.  Works
great.
