Experiments with RSS and Taxonomy
Thanks to the Syndic8 project I've managed to get my hands on a
number of great feeds. Lately, I've been working on a project that
builds the content from these RSS feeds into online 'newspaper' of
sorts that is constantly being updated as new content flows in. On
the 'top page' is a list of top level categories, such as 'World
News', 'Science', 'Technology', 'Society', etc. Each category
contains all of the latest news from all the sub-categories below it,
allowing the newest items to float to the top. Clicking on a category
makes that category the 'top page' exposing new, more specific, sub-
categories and content. Again, each sub-category contains the items
of all the categories below it. This 'drill-down' process can be
repeated again and again until there are no sub-categories (that is,
a specific topic has been reached). This means that you can get a
quick glimpse of a broad category such as 'Technology' and then work
your way down to a particular topic of interest, say 'Mobile
Computing'.
I'm still in the process of categorizing many of the sources (which
takes time since it must be done manually most of the time), but for
now there are enough to make the system work well enough. If you are
interested in taking a look you can do so at
http://fyuze.com/daily/ . I'd very much appreciate any feedback or
ideas.
Thanks,
