In the last couple of days, I've been going through a very similar
problem with Instant Messaging. I'd like to be able to construct a link
that means "start a chat session with X" that worked generically. But of
course, with 4 incompatible majors and lots of smaller players as well,
it's hopeless.[1]

Once upon a time there would have been an RFC about this.
