NIFT and IPTC subjects for categorization?

Current RSS categortizaton seems to be based on DMOZ categories.

What about NIFT and IPTC subjects [1][2][3], cant's they used for 
categorization?
Can they be referred as URIs? 
Has there been an efforts to bring NewsML and RSS camps closer 
together?
