Alan, there's a natural synergy between RSS as a Headline syndication
format and the full syndication formats like NewsML and NITF. RSS can be
seen as the equivalent of banner advertising and the syndication formats
as an additional revenue stream for content generators.
In both your roles with Screaming media and the NITF group, anything you
can do to promote RSS would be much appreciated.
I spent Tuesday afternoon at the content management show in London
talking to the CMS vendors. They are all moving to XML stores and XML
output plugins which make it relatively easy to create any new XML
format output. The problem is the classic catch-22. They don't write a
new plug in unless their customers ask for it. Their customers don't ask
for it because they don't know about it, it's not included by default
and the CMS vendors don't tell them about the possibility.
With your position in the middle of the Content industry, you're ideally
placed to push both sides into supporting the standards that are already
out there.
BTW. The Syndic8 project is generating a lot of activity around
promoting RSS. obSSP (Shameless self promotion!). I've written an
article about it at
