Okay, the "rest" of us are saying move on with the issue. If anyone has any
objections they are free to make them known on the list.
So far I've heard a vocal minority arguing vehemently about this topic,
another group saying "move on with it", and a third group completely silent
-- the silent ones are the vast majority. I take their silence to mean they
are waiting for this issue to be resolved.
Rael, I understand you wanting to get group consensus, but (1) the group
already wants to move on, and (2) committees never decided a damn thing
anyway. Maybe my vision is clouded because I'm in the military, but I
believe that leaders have to make hard decisions that those underneath them
may never understand. That's their job. Failing to make a decision is bad
for everyone involved.
Somebody somewhere is going to get pissed off no matter what is done. That's
the price you have to pay. Maybe I'll be one of those pissed off people. So
be it.
I'm not criticizing you personally -- you are very cordial and have been
extremely patient, and are a great proponent of the RDF approach (which I
personally prefer now that I grok it), and I admire that greatly. I also
admire your respect for the process you have set forth on RSS-DEV, it is
quite a noble goal, and can work most of the time. But this situation needs
to be resolved, and it can't be resolved by committee alone. There is a time
for quick, decisive action, and that time is now.
To whoever has the authority to do this:
Make the decision. Hold a poll. Make the poll binding. This is the decision
point. Do we or do we not change the name of RSS 1.0? Leave it at that.
Don't add anything about changing RSS 0.9x at all -- leave that up to the
capable hands of the reallySimpleSyndication list. RSS-DEV only holds sway
over one thing -- RSS 1.0 -- and it is ultimately the only thing that
RSS-DEV can decide on. If the vote is in favor of renaming, then have a call
for names under it's own thread, so all name suggestions go under one thread
for tracking purposes, and then hold a vote for the most popular choices.
Make it binding.
It's as simple as that.
Anyone lurking has had ample time to state their minds. Time to move on.
Fortune favors the bold. Carpe Diem. Etc.
(which is why Netscape and Dave W was so successful with RSS -- they just
did it!)

PS Lurkers, if you have anything meaningful to add, just do it! Otherwise
the future of the entire format(s) will be decided by a small handful of
people, and their/our decisions may not be the best for you. Only way for
everyone to know is to speak up!
