I'm beginning to think that this is a major issue as the sheer volume of
noise increases on the net. RSS is a double edged sword here because it
both allows syndication of small sites, but also encourages more sources
to spread and become available. (That didn't come out quite right, but
you get the idea). The end result is the Newsheadline system with 3500
sources each generating 5 new stories a day. I don't have time to read
the headlines let alone the content. And this is just the beginning.
On the SuperOpenDirectory list, I've tried to start a thread by dropping
a meme into it.
"SuperOpenRatings"
Wouldn't it be good if we could:-
- Distribute the content generation
and
- Distribute the content distribution and syndication
and
- Distribute the categorization effort
and
- Distribute the rating and editorial judgement?
And then we could do what Moreover do with their emails but only inform
me of content with a high value - low bullshit rating.
This is strictly a thought experiment at the moment and needs a lot of
working out, but it looks like some RSS extensions, OPML and the work
already done on the SuperOpenDirectory might just allow this to work.
I was getting stuck because the easy way to rate something is to keep
the index and rating in a central database, but that doesn't feel right.
Then I thought about the game of conkers. A conker gains points for each
conker it beats. But it also adds the points the other conker
represents. Maybe there's a way in here for ratings to accumulate as the
syndicated content is passed around.
Or something.
