RE: [syndication] What is the state of syndicated stock quote inf o?

AFAIK, there is no "open" source for stock quote info. Sites that have stock
quotes tend to pay quite a bit of money to data providers for the feed.

It is possible to write or use tools that get stock quotes from some other
site and use them as you wish (for example, there is a Perl module that will
retrieve quotes from Yahoo! as an array, I believe) but using something like
that on a commercial site would seem to be stealing. You'd basically be
stealing a feed that someone paid good money for. I.e., unless someone is
obviously making their resource available for syndication, taking it by
other means (scraping, etc.) seems shady to me.

There was some fairly-recent (last 6 - 8 months?) Congressional action (or
perhaps legal cases -- my memory fades) that dealt with who owns the data
about a stock trade. The long and the short of it, I believe, was that the
markets (NASDAQ, NYSE, etc.) owned the data about each trade. Thus, no free
quotes. You may find some info on this on Slashdot...

HTH!

Subject: [syndication] What is the state of syndicated stock quote info?

Just doing some basic research but hitting dead ends :(

Anyone know the status on syndicated stock quotes? I want to have stock
quote support within Jetspeed (java.apache.org/jetspeed) and I need to
have an Open provider mechanism.

The thing is that this info should be public. It should belong to the
community.

Any thoughts?
